Top tips to make your soy wax candle last longer.
Candle fan? Yeah, me too. Scented candles have always been my favourite wellbeing treats, long before I became a candle maker myself. I cannot tell you (nor do I want to know) how much money I have spent on candles over the years! In my opinion, there is nothing better than lighting a handmade soy wax candle at the end of a stressful day.... I've even got to the point where I travel with mini candles in my suitcase because I need them to help me chill out before I go to sleep. Maybe it's time to admit it - I am a candle addict! So after investing so much time and money to find the best candles, I want to make sure I get the most out of them. Here are my tips for helping your candle last as long as possible...
My gift to you - tips to make your candle last longer:
1. The first burn is the most important - make sure you have a few hours before you have to blow out the candle.
You need to burn your candle until the wax has melted all the way to the edge of the jar. This can take hours, depending on the size of the container.
This will prevent tunnelling (when unmelted wax is wasted at the edge of the jar.) Candles have a 'wax memory', so if on the first burn the wax pool doesn't reach the edge, it never will. Every time you light it, the candle will only melt as wide as it did on the first burn, and will tunnel further down into the wax and eventually not be able to stay alight.
If you are experiencing tunnelling, you can fix this by wrapping aluminium foil around the outside of the candle container as it burns. Cut a hole in the aluminium, over the flame, so that it has access to oxygen. Make sure the aluminium reaches the area of wax that you are trying to melt. After a few hours, the aluminium should have helped melt the hard wax at the edge of the container.
2. After the first burn, always trim the wick to approx. 5mm before lighting the candle.
This will give you a cleaner and slower burn. Wicks that have not been trimmed will have a large and unstable flame which can melt the wax too quickly and emit excess smoke. The extra heat from a larger flame can burn off the fragrance oils before they have a chance to be enjoyed. What a waste of expensive fragrance!
Ever had a candle jar that is all black and sooty at the edge? You can avoid this by trimming the wick.
You can buy a fancy wick trimmer, use scissors or nail clippers work really well too.
3. Burn for a maximum of four hours:
If you burn your candle for too long, the candle and the container can overheat, causing the wax to burn even faster. The wick may also shift within the candle, leading to a wonky wick and an uneven burn.
Always blow your candle out after four hours and allow it to fully solidify before relighting.
4. When not in use, store your candle away from direct sunlight and replace the candle lid.
If left in a warm spot, the fragrance oils may evaporate from the wax and your candle will not smell as strongly the next time you light it.

Soy wax is the perfect natural material for long lasting and strong smelling candles:
Soy wax has a low melting point, which means the wax burns slowly and lasts a long time. It has been shown to last 40-50% longer than a paraffin wax candle of the same size.
Soy wax does not emit much smoke or create a sooty residue. This is better for your health, no-one wants a smoky environment in their home.
Soy wax is an all natural, non toxic and renewable resource and can be an eco-friendly material if sourced from ethical suppliers.
Soy wax is a vegan-friendly material, when combined with cruelty free fragrance oils.
Soy wax blends well with fragrance oils, requiring fewer chemicals to help it emit a strong scent throw.
